While free-agent signings usually make NHL headlines at this time of year, it’s been a busier-than-usual summer for trade activity. Phil Kessel, T.J. Oshie, Ryan O’Reilly, Milan Lucic and Dougie Hamilton are among the notable players dealt thus far.
One reason behind the trade traffic is the lack of top talent in this summer’s free-agent market. For fans of the Washington Capitals, this has to be one of the most exciting free-agency periods in franchise history.

The Buffalo Sabres and Ryan O’Reilly have agreed to a new contract that will keep the veteran forward with the team for seven years. 
Ian Ott of SabresDigitalPressBox.com reported O’Reilly’s seven-year extension with the Sabres.
Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada reported that Buffalo will pay O’Reilly an average salary of $7.5 million for the duration of his contract, putting the total value of the deal around $52.5 million.
